Indigenous Heritage Protection and Safeguarding Kathkuni Temple in Himachal Pradesh, India

The project undertaken in the village Chehni, Tirthan Valley, is about restoration and safeguarding the cultural identity embedded within the intricate wooden structures and ancient construction techniques. At the heart lies the preservation of Kathkuni architecture, a traditional building style endemic to the local community. The Kathkuni method, renowned for its resilience against harsh climates, forms the cornerstone of the temple's construction. Its distinctiveness, characterized by finely carved wooden motifs and slate roofs, reflects the ingenuity and craftsmanship of generations past. Central to the project is community engagement, where indigenous construction methods are employed, ensuring the temple's restoration remains authentic and culturally resonant. The repair work was done only in the specific area where it was required without any changes in the existing structure.Further, the project did GIS mapping of 300 heritage temples in district Kullu, along with intangible heritage associated with the temples. This Project is supported by Cultural Emergency Response (CER). CER is a Netherlands-based organization that coordinates and supports locally-led protection of heritage under threat.
